Amistad, a Steven Spielberg–directed film—a true story about a 19th century mutiny on a slave ship that sparked a legal battle before the Supreme Court of the United States and provided a prelude to the Civil War—will be our Tuesday night screening at the 2010 Fordham Law Film Festival. There are many great stars in the film, and we are especially proud to be able to host two stellar post-screening guests: acclaimed actress and choreographer Debbie Allen, who produced Amistad, and Annette Gorden-Reed, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family. Stay tuned for an important post-screening conversation about the way the law initially treated the ownership of slaves, along with whether it matters that such a profound story dealing with the origins of race in America ended up being directed by a white filmmaker.
Amistad will be shown Tuesday, Oct. 19, during the Fordham Law Film Festival. The festival runs Oct. 15-21, 2010.
